Motivation is the key to success for all students. Every student, no matter how bright or academically challenged, benefits from having a teacher in tune with his or her personal needs. Before a teacher even attempts to motivate students on an individual level, an environment conducive to success for all students must be created. The teacher must also establish rapport by having a positive attitude, genuine enthusiasm, and by being consistent. Academic content should be engaging and instruction should be differentiated.
Another important factor to motivating students, is building their confidence. This will take patience, understanding, flexibility, and determination on the part of the teacher. Criticism and punishment should be avoided while praise should be forthcoming and sincere. Rewards offer great incentives for children to expand their efforts. The ultimate goal of a teacher is to assist their students in attaining success in the classroom. Introducing students to success at an early age makes them more apt to seek it in all aspects of their life for the rest of their life. Every child is different and special and deserves to be taught in a way that motivates them to reach their full potential.
